The first trip to the dentist is a big milestone. For some kids, it’s exciting. For others, it’s a little scary. And for many parents, it’s honestly a bit nerve-wracking too. Will my child sit still? Will they cry? Are we starting too early or too late?
Take a deep breath. At Complete Dentistry, we see children of all ages, and we know exactly how to make that first dental visit positive, gentle, and even fun. Dr. Morgan Chambers and our team are patient, kind, and experienced with little ones. Here’s exactly what you can expect so you and your child can walk in feeling prepared.

When Should the First Visit Happen?
The American Dental Association recommends bringing your child in by their first birthday or within six months of their first tooth appearing. Whichever comes first.
That might seem early. But those baby teeth are placeholders for adult teeth. They help your child chew, speak, and smile with confidence. Starting early builds good habits and helps us catch any tiny issues before they become big ones.
If your child is older and hasn’t been to the dentist yet, don’t worry. It’s never too late to start. Just give us a call.
Before You Arrive: A Little Prep Goes a Long Way
You know your child best. For some kids, reading a picture book about visiting the dentist the night before works wonders. For others, simply talking about it in a calm, positive way is enough.
We recommend avoiding words like “shot,” “drill,” or “hurt.” Instead, use friendly terms like “counting teeth,” “taking pictures of your smile,” and “giving your teeth a tickle.”
And please, don’t let your own dental anxiety rub off on them. Kids pick up on parental nerves. Stay relaxed, and they’ll take their cues from you.
What Happens During the Appointment?
The first visit is gentle, simple, and short, usually about 30 minutes. Here’s a typical flow:
- Meet and Greet: We start by introducing ourselves and letting your child get comfortable in the chair. We might let them ride up and down or look at some of our “fun tools.”
- An Exam: Dr. Chambers will gently look inside your child’s mouth. She’ll check for cavities, look at how the teeth are coming in, and examine the gums and jaw.
- A Gentle Cleaning: Our hygienist will polish your child’s teeth with a soft brush and a yummy-flavored paste. We’ll also floss if your child is ready for it.
- X-rays (If Needed): Depending on your child’s age and whether any teeth are touching, we might take a quick digital X-ray. These are fast and use very low radiation.
- Education and Tips: We’ll show your child how to brush properly and talk to you about fluoride, thumb-sucking, and diet. We’ll also answer any questions you have.
How to Handle Fussiness or Fear
Some kids cry. Some squirm. And some refuse to open their mouths at first. That’s completely normal. We see it every day.
Our team is trained to work with children of all temperaments. We go at your child’s pace. We use gentle words, distraction, and positive reinforcement. If your child needs a break, we take one. If they need to sit in your lap, that’s fine too.
We also offer sedation options for children who are extremely anxious or need more complex treatment. But for a first visit, most kids do just fine without it.
Making It a Positive Experience
We want your child to leave with a smile, and maybe even ask when they can come back. So we praise them for their bravery. We give them a small prize or sticker. And we tell them they did an amazing job. Those little moments build a lifetime of good dental habits.
